A to Z on how to use google fonts on your website

How to embed google font to your website
How to embed google font to your website

Adding google font to your website is very easy and simple. Follow the following procedures below to add google fonts to your website.

Find Your Preferred Google Font:

Yes, the first thing you need to do is to find your preferred google font i.e (finding the google font you would like to use on your website) and to do this, go directly to the Google font website (See Image below)

A to Z on how to use google fonts on your website
A to Z on how to use google fonts on your website

Select The Google Font:

Looking at the image above, you will see several fonts with their respective text examples, let’s say we want to use the font “Roboto” for our website. The next step to take is to select the font by left-clicking on the plus (+) sign in red beside it (See the image above).

A minimized dialog box  with title “1 Family selected” will appear directly above your system task bar, left-click on the minus (-) sign to maximize the dialog (see image below).

A to Z on how to use google fonts on your website
A to Z on how to use google fonts on your website

After maximizing the dialog box, all its details will be revealed, then under “EMBED” you will see two other options the STANDARD and @IMPORT, the links you see directly under this when any of them is selected are what we are going to use for this tutorial.

Embed the link into your website page:

In the dialog box, you will see that there are two methods of adding google fonts to your website and they are;

The Standard Method:

For me, this is the best method of adding Google fonts to your website, this is done by simply taking the font URL or font link that you got from google font website (see image below).

A to Z on how to use google fonts on your website
A to Z on how to use google fonts on your website

Copy and paste the code in-between your web-page head tags <head>Place the font link Here</head>.

To copy, first highlight the text link by placing your cursor at the beginning of the link, left-click and hold, then drag it to the end of the link.

On your keyboard press “Ctrl + C” to copy the font link and after copying the link, use “Ctrl + V” to paste it in-between your web-page head tag (see image below).

As you can see in the image below, the opening and closing tag in red block while the font link is in-between them.

A to Z on how to use google fonts on your website
A to Z on how to use google fonts on your website

The Import Method:

This is the second method of adding google font into a web-page. It requires copying the second link that appears when you click the @IMPORT in the dialog box (see image below).

You either paste this link in a stylesheet in-between the head tags or directly in a separate CSS .

A to Z on how to use google fonts on your website
A to Z on how to use google fonts on your website

Note: After pasting the font link, nothing will happen (i.e you wont see the google font) until you implement/specify the web font in the stylesheet

Specify the Google fonts in CSS (Cascading Style Sheet):

Specifying the google font in CSS is just like telling your stylesheet to use the font (Roboto) for the web page, to tell the stylesheet which font to use and this can be done in two ways (see image below).

For internal stylesheet; Copy the CSS rule in the dialog box and paste it as shown below i.e the one in red while the one in yellow was the font link you previously pasted in-between the head tag.

A to Z on how to use google fonts on your website

For External Stylesheet;

Now see the difference between the two web-pages, the first image is when the google font-family(Roboto, sans-serif) has not yet been applied and the second image is when it has been applied.

Website Traffic; Boost it Now!!

It is true that no one is an island of knowledge but the knowledge you get from your past experiences matters a lot in your life. From the experiences i gained while managing my first website, I present to you some great tips that will help you be that successful blogger you have always wanted to be.

What is going to be my benefit at the end of this article?

Yesoo! today is going to be a  day never to forget because at the end of this article, you are going to be a potential blogger with over 10,000 visitors monthly, this is only if you are going to apply at-least 80% of what you are going to learn from this article.

What is our topic for today?

You should have known our topic for today!, well i bring to you 10 PERFECT STEPS TO BOOST YOUR WEBSITE TRAFFIC FOR FREE.

Before we continue, you should first ask yourself this question “What Is Website Traffic ? “, this is because for the sake of newbies reading this now, it is eminent for you to know firstly what a website traffic is before knowing how to boost it.

Website Traffic:

According to Wikipedia, a website traffic is the amount of data sent and received by visitors to a website. Therefore a website traffic is determined by the number of visitors and the number of pages visited.

In Layman understanding, we can say that a website traffic is the amount of visitors received by a website, which will lead us to say that our topic today is simply the “10 perfect steps to attract more visitors to your website”.

So what are those 10 perfect steps to take ?

Today, many businesses/companies are present online through their websites, yet none of their customers have noticed their online presence except those working with them. It is not all about having a website that makes people know that you are there rather it is all about reaching out to them, so, the question that comes next is “How do you reach out to them ?”.

The easiest and simplest way to reach out to your customers is through your “Blog“, For example, if you have a company that deals with sales of electronics and you have a website, your website is not enough to reach out to all your customers, you also need a blog where you can guide them on how to use your products, either through “How to articles” or “How to videos” posted on your blog.

Through the blog you also communicate more with your customers to know more of their problems and what they really want from your products, also through your blog you inform your customers on the latest improvements on your products.

By keeping them informed always, they in-return will be visiting your blog always in seek of the latest info thereby boosting your website traffic.

Note: It is necessary to always keep the consistency rule in blogging.

Write Quality Contents:

In order to achieve higher page rank in search engines thereby improving your website traffic, you must always post good and original content on your website/blog. Don’t just go to the internet to copy and paste another person’s article on your website, that will only bring nothing but penalties for you. Even if you want to write on a topic someone has written before, you can take the person’s article as a guide/reference rather than using it verbatim. Rephrase each line of the article, surf the internet and add new ideas to the article and remove unnecessary ones, make the article more valuable and original. then you can be proud to call it your own article.

Also you have to put in mind is that your articles must have “very catchy titles“, let the title attract new visitors to your website/blog and mind you that the titles must correspond to the article.

Another important tip here is that you must arrange your posts with heading and sub-headings, the H1 tag i.e

for the title heading while the h2,h3,h4,h5,h6 for the rest of subheadings (this improves your website SEO).

Finally let your content always encourage visitors to linger on the site, viewing many pages in a visit thereby boosting your website traffic.

Share Your Articles/Posts On Social Media Sites:

Today we have  lots of social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn etc. These websites have high traffic and your work is to channel those traffic to your site by posting your newly published articles on those social media sites, these will help you reach lots of audience that will in-return visit your website thereby boosting your website traffic. But before you post on those sites, you must first create an account with them.

The next tip under this sub-topic is that you must find the perfect time to share on the social media sites i.e don’t share your post when you know that most of your friends on those social media platform aren’t around, always share when they are around so that they can click and visit at once.

Paid Advertising:

One example of paid advertising is PPC (Pay Per Click) also known as CPC (Cost Per Click),  it is an internet advertising model used to direct traffic to websites in which an advertiser pays a publisher (typically a website owner or a network of websites) when the ad is clicked.

Websites that offer PPC are;

  1. Google (Google Adword)
  2. Microsoft Bing Ads
  3. Facebook Ads and
  4. Twitter Ads etc.

Note: This is not a mandatory step to take in other to boost your website traffic though it is effective, but if you have the money, then i suggest you go for it by clicking directly on the above links.

Placement Of Site In Search Engine:

By manually adding your site to site engines, it makes it possible for your website/blog to appear in several search engines showing off its catchy titles, thereby reaching out to lots of people that will visit your website/blog. Click on the link to place your site/blog in several search engines Click Here” to submit your website/blog to upto ten (10) search engines.

Non Internet Based Advertising:

Everything is not internet, internet cannot do everything for you. if you are marketing your content or you want people to visit your website so as to improve your website/blog traffic, and for them to see and buy your products, then you also have to advertise through other means like;

  • Sharing of your business fliers with your website/blog URL printed on it.
  • Face to face advertisement
  • Give out your complementary cards
  • Tell your friends to inform others and finally
  • Help and solve other people’s problems and advice to contact you via your website/blog.

 Great SEO:

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is nowadays more important than ever. Search Engine Optimization is a set of rules that is to be followed by website/blog owners in order to optimize their websites for search engine thereby increasing the quality of their websites by making them user friendly, faster and easier to  navigate.

SEO improves website’s search engine ranking and also website traffic.

Note: if two websites are selling the same product, the search engine optimized website/blog is likely to get more customers than the site with no SEO, Good SEO always goes with good content.

Comment On Other Blogs:

Always make sure you leave thoughtful comments on other people’s  blogs (with your website/blog URL under the comments), the more you do this, the more you help solve other people’s problems. I bet you nobody will tell them to visit your site yet they will be flooding your website with the mindset of receiving more solutions to their problems.

Organize Seminars:

When i say “Organize Seminars”, it isn’t mandatory if you don’t have the strength, courage and finance to do it, but i must tell you that the effect, i mean! how your web traffic will boost is going to be like magic to you, so i suggest you go for it if you must boost your website traffic in a miraculous way.

Organizing Seminars is not just gathering individuals, teach them one or two things and in return ask them to visit your site. You must teach, train and practicalize on the few topics, even if is only one topic. i tell you, provided you treated them well and they grabbed some skills from your seminar, no one will even tell them to visit your site/blog, they will be the ones asking for your website and email address.

Okay, assuming you had about 200 persons around during the seminar and eventually only 100 chooses to visit your website/blog. My dear, that 100 persons will continue to visit your site provided you keep updating your blog with informative posts.

Finally, be the Promo Type:

Yes!, if you want your visitors to keep visiting your site everyday, then you must be the promo type of man or woman. For example, let them know that any purchase they make on your site comes with an extra reward which can simply be in form of “Free E-book” of very interesting topics.

I believe there are still a lot of inspiring tips that will help attract more visitors to our websites, but i promise you only if you will apply 80% of this ones, then you are definitely going to experience the miraculous traffic invasion.

Best Font For Your Website/Blog

Choose the best font for websites
Best font for websites

The font you use on your website/blog matters a lot, it can affect  you positively or negatively. Most times you design your website/blog with certain fonts that looks so great on your website but when  your audience views the same website/blog, he/she sees something different from what you originally designed. This is simply because the font you used on your website/blog is not present in the viewers computer system/browser. Whenever the preferred font you used isn’t present on the viewers computer system/web browser, the viewers Web browser attempts to use the next font in the list (If you used more than one font i.e “Font Family”). If none of the fonts specified are found, the viewers browser displays its default font.

How Do You Know if the font you used on your website/blog is present in the viewers computer system/browser ?

Though not all fonts are available on every one’s computer system/browser but there are few fonts that are likely to be available on almost every computer system, and this fonts are called “Web Safe Fonts”.

What are “Web Safe Fonts” ?

Web Safe Fonts are the fonts that are likely to be present on a wide range of computer systems/browsers that are used by web content authors to increase the likelihood that content displays in their chosen font. So as a newbie in web-development, it will be safer to start with the Web Safe Fonts.

Ten (10) Web Safe Fonts

  • Lucida Sans
  • Arial/Helvetica
  • Tahoma
  • Times New Roman
  • Courier New
  • Verdana
  • Microsoft Sans Serif
  • Trebuchet Ms
  • Georgia
  • Comic Sans Ms

Like i said earlier, this fonts are likely to be present on a wide range of computer systems/browsers. So with any of the fonts above, your website/blog  retains its original font on almost all devices and browsers. In-case none of this fonts suits your website, i advice you to use Google Web Fonts on your website, also with google fonts, your website/blog fonts will appear on every website/blog exactly as when you designed it. If you are a newbie and you don’t know how to use Google Web Fonts.

Check this outA to Z on how to use google fonts on your website.

Choosing Font Size:

Generally, people believe that font-size of 16 pixel is ideal to be used on websites. Personally, I prefer using font size of 14 pixel, but if your website/blog is specifically meant for a target audience of individuals with reading issues, then it will be better you use font size range of 15px – 18px.

Another thing is if as a newbie, you still not sure if 14px or 16px is the right font size for your website. I suggest you visit other websites on the internet, go through their pages by viewing it both on desktop and on mobile, if you encounter any page that you like reading from, then that is the right page with the right font/font-size to choose. Imitate that particular website by using the exact font/font-size. If you don’t know how to detect the right font/font-size used on other website pages, check this out; How to detect font and font-size used on other website pages.

Note: You have to be aware that different fonts with the same font-size may look differently (In sizes) on different devices.

Finally, please don’t hesitate to share your own view on the best font and font size for websites….

Things needed to create a simple website
Things needed to create a simple website

Yes!, as someone who is truly interested and willing to do all it takes to become a website designer/developer, there are questions that always comes to the mind of every newbie, and these questions are;

  • Firstly, “What are the necessary things required to create a website?”
  • Now the second question that comes after knowing the answer to the first question is “Are they really available? i.e. you wanting to know if those things required to create a website, whether they are at your reach or not”
  • Finally, the last question is “Now am aware of the things needed and also aware that they are available, then how can I utilize them? i.e. how you can use them to create a good looking and functional website” .

Now all your questions have been asked, i promise to do as much as I can to render a befitting answer to all of them. I will start by answering the first question;

Question One:
What are the necessary things required to create a website?

Listed and briefly explained below are the necessary things required to create a website, which without them, the website design/development won’t be a reality.

Now let’s go…..

We all know that you must have a Personal computer before you ever start thinking of creating a website on your own. This is where you install all the programs necessary for the development of the website, having a personal computer of your own helps you in terms of consistency, you must be consistent in practice in order to excel in website designing/development. See also “The-things-you-need-to-know-before-buying-laptop”

The first tool to consider as a beginner in web designing/development assuming you already have a PC is a CMS program or a website designing software/framework to use. There are many CMS programs/ website designing softwares/framework you can use to create a website, e.g. Dreamweaver, WordPress, Joomla, Bluegriffon and Composer etc. but for the sake of this article, we are going to concentrate fully on creating a website with Adobe Dreamweaver.

Dreamweaver is a Content Management System (CMS) program that you can visually use to create and manage any kind of website. Dreamweaver is among “WYSWYG”programs, i.e. it helps us to create and manage our website visually, whatever you apply with dreamweaver is what and how you are going to see it when published.

With the aid of a web host, you can transfer your newly created webpages from your own computer to your root-server that are permanently connected to the internet, therefore making your webpages visible on the internet where every person in the world can see it.

After creating your website with Adobe Dreamweaver, you will now have to decide on the webhosting company you will host your website with and you have to be careful on which web hosting company to choose in order to avoid choosing a webhost that does not suit your need at all. See also “13 major things to consider before choosing a webhost”.

But for those that wants to create and test their website without first choosing/registering with a webhosting company should consider using “Wampserver/Xamp” as the alternative to webhosting, this one you will host your website on your own computer “local server” i.e. you will be able to view your web pages in browser using your own computer. This is for temporal purpose which when you are ready, you will then choose/register with a webhosting company of your choice. See also “How-to-search-buy-and-register-a-domain-name”

Now that we have known the answer to the first question, let’s go over to the second question.

Question Two:
“Are they really available? i.e. you wanting to know if those things required to design/develop a website, whether they are at your reach or not”

Yes they are all available at your own reach; let’s take for instance you already have a working personal computer. All you need to do is to go to the Adobe Dreamweaver official download website at http://www.adobe.com/products/dreamweaver.html (Download here) and download a trial version.

Also to download either Wamp or Xamp Server, please visit http://www.wampserver.com/en/ and https://www.apachefriends.org/download.html to download yours now respectively free of charge.

Finally when i say “The necessary things required to create a website”, I am not talking of only the tools required but also the attitude needed to be a successful web designer.

A potential web designer/developer must be zealous and inquisitive i.e. He or She must be somebody who is willing, passionate and always wanting to know more at all time. This behavior increases the chances of you been a great web designer/developer.

Question Three:

How can I utilize them?

Utilizing these tools i.e. creating a website with these tools is very simple. In the next chapter, we are going to talk on “HOW TO DESIGN A WEBSITE IN DREAMWEAVER” and “HOW TO HOST YOUR WEBSITE LOCALLY USING WAMP/XAMP SERVER

At the end of next chapter, you will be able to create a simple website and put it on the internet, which you can be able to view at anytime using your system web browser.

Comprehensive website terminologies
Comprehensive website terminologies

It is quite normal and healthier to build a house with a strong foundation, i.e. before thinking of your dream mansion; you have to first think of its foundation, the same goes to developing a website without having its basic knowledge.

In everything we do in life, we should try to know its basics. There is this my good friend that can actually design a basic website with few CMS programs especially with “Dreamweaver” and he calls himself a professional web developer, but his major problem is that he knows few or nothing in the theoretical aspect of web developing and this really gives him hard times, if you ask him the meaning of “Website” he can’t be proud enough to render the correct meaning. So, this was one of the major reasons why I compiled this.

First, we start by outlining the major terminologies used in website/Blog designing.

Website Blog Domain Name Webhost
Domain Registrar Nameserver Web-page Indexing of web-pages
RSS HTML Backlinks FTP

A website which can be written  in three ways “Web site, Website and Site” is a set  of  related web pages typically served from a single web domain, it is hosted on at-least one web server, accessible via a network such as internet or private local area network through an internet address known as a uniform resource locator (URL). All publicly accessible websites collectively constitutes the World Wide Web (www).

A blog also known as weblog is a term used to describe discussion/informational websites that maintains continuous information, it features links to other articles on other websites.

Domain Name:

A domain name is simply an identification string that defines a realm of administrative autonomy, authority control within the internet. Example of a domain name: ceeceecomputers.com is my own domain name, so whenever you here of a domain name, just know that it is just that name you use to identify yourself or your business online.

Assuming we bisect the term “Webhost” “Web + Host” i.e. “Web” for Website while “Host” for Hosting so combining the two together “Website Hosting” is just the process of hosting a website.

This brings us to the former  term “Webhost”, is the company that hosts website for their clients i.e. the companies that provide space on a server owned or leased for use by clients, as well as providing internet connectivity typically in a data center.

The scope of webhosting services varies greatly but the most basic is web page and small-scale file hosting.

Domain Registrar:

This is a commercial body responsible for the management and reservation of internet domain names. E.g. of domain name registrars; Registeram.com,  Godaddy, Hostgator e.t.c.

It is a software server that implements a network service for providing responses to queries against a directory service.

A Nameserver translates an often humanly meaningful text-based identifier to a system internal i.e. using DNS (Domain Name System) servers as an example, its function is to translate the domain names and hostnames into the corresponding numeric internet protocol (IP) addresses.

The translation is made possible by pointing the domain name to your hosting nameservers.

Web Pages:

Known as the building blocks of websites, they are documents typically written in plain text with formatting instructions of hypertext Markup Language (HTML, XHTML), they are accessed with HTTP.

Rich Site Summary abbreviated as “RSS” is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. Many news related sites, weblogs and other online publishers syndicate their contents as an RSS Feed to whoever wants it. RSS allows bloggers/website owners to easily stay informed by retrieving the latest content from the sites they are interested in. So many sites offer RSS feeds.

Indexing of Web-Pages:

Also known as web indexing or internet indexing simply refers to various methods of  telling search engines about your new web-pages therefore making it possible for your audience to find all your web-pages on search engines even if they don’t actually know the right “page url”. Google search is one example of search engines.

Known as HyperText  Markup Language is the standard markup language used in creating web pages, which can be read by web browsers giving a visible web pages as the output.

Designing of web-pages involves mainly the use of HTML and CSS s ometimes PHP. HTML gives the “structure” while the CSS gives the “styles”. HTML begins with <html> and ends with </html>.

Also known as incoming links, inbound links, inlinks and inward links, are incoming links to a website or webpage. In basic link terminology, a backlink is any link received by a web node (web page, directory, website, or top level domain) from another web page.

File Transfer Protocol is a standard network protocol in form of computer software used to transfer computer files from one host to another host over an internet connection. Example: We use Filezilla, Classic FTP e.t.c to transfer our web pages/files from our local server (the computer used in creating the web-pages) to your domain hosting company server.

Note: All files that you want to be visible online should be uploaded in “public_html” directory.

This is Content Management System, a computer application that gives room for editing, modifying, organizing, deleting and publishing of webpage contents. CMSs are often used to run websites containing blogs, news and shopping carts, many web designers/developers use CMS just to escape the hand coding process of managing content. Examples of CMSs are {Dreamweaver, Joomla, WordPress} e.t.c.

This is a particular software component that adds a specific feature to an existing software application. Plugins extends and expands the functionality of CMS.

Example of plugins: Web browsers plugins which can be “search engine, virus scanners, and Adobe flash plugins” e.t.c. conclusively plugins helps to expand the functionality of the web-browsers.

Which is known as the “Cascading Style Sheets” is used in giving a html layout its “design and styles” needed i.e. its look and formatting (layouts, colours and fonts).

PHP is also a scripting language designed for web development but also used as a general-purpose programming language. PHP codes are mostly mixed with HTML codes. A PHP code is processed by a PHP interpreter.

Website development  is a very interesting course/profession and also very easy to learn provided you started from the basic to the advanced.

Before we start the tutorial, I will first like to introduce what WordPress is all about;

This is a free and open-source content management system (CMS) based on PHP and MySQL.  Features include plugin architecture and a template system. WordPress was used by more than 23.3% of the top 10 million websites as of January 2015. WordPress is the most popular blogging system in use on the Web, at more than 60 million websites.

It was first released on May 27, 2003, by its founders, Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little, as a fork of b2/cafelog. The license under which WordPress software is released is the GPLv2 (or later) from the Free Software Foundation.

So for the sake of this tutorial, we should agree that WordPress is the way to go, no looking back. With that established, let’s lay out the steps involved in installation of WordPress locally using Wampserver.

Step One:

Google and Download WordPress 4.2.2 Zip File and extract it. http://www.wordpress.org.

Step Two:

Now download “5-Apache-2.4.9-Mysql-5.6.17-php5.5.12-32b” @ http://www.wampserver.com.

Now after downloading and extracting the zip files……

Step Three:

Double-click on the installed wampserver icon wampicon in order to install it and remember to grant it admin permission, then click Next

Check “Launch webserver 2 now” and click Finish.

There you will see “wamp folder” in “ Local Disk”, double click to open it.

Open the “www” folder and create a new folder with name “myblog” in it

I renamed mine “ceecee”, so you have to rename yours “myblog”

Copy everything in the WordPress folder and paste them in “myblog” folder of yours, the one created in “www” folder.

Now in that folder, you will see a file named “ wp-config-sample” , right click on it and click on “open with” and select the notepad, assuming you couldn’t find the notepad, just click on “browse” and locate it.

Inside it replace the default details with the following:

* (‘DB_NAME’, ‘myblog‘);                              use “myblog” as I used here

/** MySQL database username */

define(‘DB_USER’, ‘root‘);                            use” root” as I used here

/** MySQL database password */

define(‘DB_PASSWORD‘, ”);                        leave it blank as I did here

/** MySQL hostname */

define(‘DB_HOST’, ‘localhost‘);                  Use “local host as I used here.

Then save it after changing the above details.

Rename by removing the “-sample” attached to the file name “wp-config-sample” therefore having “wp-config”

Double-click on phpMyAdmin at the taskbar.

As you can see that my wampserver icon is green in colour i.e. it was installed properly and ready to go.

Wow!!!, here comes your wampserver Dashboard…

Now it is time for creating Database. But before we create database, we should first understand what database is all about.

A Database

A database is where all your WordPress data is stored, including your content (i.e. posts, pages and comments), configurations and user data.

Each time a page loads, WordPress queries the database for all of the required information, such as title, content, categories, tags and published date.

The normal way of creating database is by going to your host’s control panel; there you will create a database and a database user name and password for WordPress to connect with.

But since we want to install the WordPress locally i.e. on our local server, then that is why we are making use of wampserver, so we are going to create the database in wampserver “phpMyAdmin”.

Click Database.

Enter your database name “myblog”

Click Create and your database will be created.

Open your browser and type the following address: localhost/myblog/wp-admin/install.php and click enter.

Welcome to WordPress Setup

Now fill in the following details in the boxes provided.

Site name: Use any Name of your choice

Username: use the default username which is “root”

Password: You can put any password of your choice

Check “Allow search engines to index this site”.

Click on Install WordPress.

Your WordPress is installed, and now you can login with your login details.

Welcome to your WordPress Dashboard, here you will be able to customize you web pages.

Note: The green colour of the wampserver icon indicates that it was installed correctly and ready to go….red colour of the icon means that it was not installed properly, so to easily correct it, uninstall the wampserver and re-install using the proper installation guideline.

I hope this helps?.
